Heat wave incoming! The weather forecast is predicting more hot weather coming to Kamloops and the surrounding area. So, we here at Downtown Kamloops thought it would be a good idea to give you all some advice on how to stay cool in the days ahead.
1. Drink Water!
It sounds lame, but this age-old piece of wisdom has stuck around for a reason. Especially while out in the heat, you need to drink water. If you’re sweating excessively – if you work outdoors or are going for a run – you’ll also need to replace the electrolytes you’re losing as well as the water. If you need to, mix an electrolyte powder into your water, or substitute a bottle of water for a bottle of your favourite sports drink.
2. Stick to the Shade and Cover Up
Prolonged direct sunlight is one of the main causes of heat stroke, and can also lead to nasty things like skin cancer. The best way to avoid this is stay in the shade whenever possible. If it’s not possible to be in the shade, make sure to wear a sun shirt and hat.
Another oldie-but-goodie. If you must be in the sun, make sure to slather on the sunscreen onto any exposed skin. This will reduce the risk of sunburn for one, but will also reduce your long-term risk of skin cancer. For maximum effectiveness, reapply sunscreen often, at least once an hour.
4. Stay Indoors
This isn’t possible for everyone, but whenever possible, stay inside and out of the sun. Keep the windows in your house closed and if you have air conditioning or fans, turn them on. This will help keep your house cool and give you a sanctuary away from the heat. It’s also a good idea to take a cold shower to help regulate your body temperature.
I know these tips seem obvious, but they can certainly help you stay safe and cool this summer. As the hot weather approaches, it can be easy to forget how dangerous heat stroke and heat exhaustion can be, but these suggestions can help you and your family stay safe.
