Back Alley Art Gallery

Back Alley Art Gallery

This summer in Downtown Kamloops come on down to see the Back-Alley Art Gallery mural program! This public mural program was undertaken because we wanted to make our alleys part of the walkable, livable space downtown. There is now a total of 30 murals in Downtown Kamloops and rather than a single theme for our murals, we wanted to create a truly eclectic collection. It’s an outdoor art gallery and like all good galleries, it features a mixture of different artistic styles! The mural artists meet with the business and property owners and collaborate on a slew of different concepts. Sometimes this means having a mural design to fit the theme of the store or letting the group’s creativity run wild!

The Back-Alley Art Gallery is an integral component in the KCBIA’s Complete Streets Initiative: public spaces that are friendly, supportive, appealing, and safe. This program creates community partnerships between the local business and creative communities and provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents, diversify the downtown business environment, and beautify public space.

Project partners include the Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Housing and Social Development and their Job Creation Partnership, the various property owners, Kamloops Arts Council, suppliers including Sherwin-Williams Paint Store, United Rentals and the BC Wildlife Park. Through coming together, we were able to take a dream and coax it into reality!

If you phone ahead of time, on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm during July and August, you can receive a tour of all the murals by your favorite CAP Team members. If you prefer to venture out at different times, you can always grab a map either online from our website or you can grab one from a CAP Team member on the street. So, this summer season, be sure to discover the works of art right around the corner!

A Walk Through the Back Alley Art Gallery

A Walk Through the Back Alley Art Gallery

Back Alley Art Gallery

The Back Alley Art Gallery is an outdoor art gallery, that like all great galleries, features a mixture of different artistic styles. We started the public mural program to make our alleys part of the walkable, livable spaces downtown. There are many murals in Downtown Kamloops. Rather than a single theme for our murals, we wanted to create a truly eclectic collection. We wanted to have a diverse range of mural styles celebrating different cultures, themes, artistic expressions, and mediums.

Murals

I have had the pleasure of coordinating the installation of the new murals in the Back Alley Art Gallery for the past two years. During this time, I have grown to have a large appreciation for the amount of talent and for local artists and their dedication to this program and community. Downtown Kamloops asked Kamloopsians what they thought of the Back Alley Art Gallery and the responses were overwhelmingly positive. We are happy that you love and appreciate the value of this great program in the community!

The attention this project has received through the media, local businesses and the tourism industry has been overwhelming. It has been instrumental in demonstrating to other organizations that they can produce their own murals. The KCBIA is thrilled to contribute to the arts and culture landscape and will continue to do so whenever we can gain funding. Our efforts have resulted in other organizations producing public murals as well. We hope the trend continues.

Conclusion

We invite you to take a stroll through the Back Alley Art Gallery and gain your own appreciation. You can find a self-guided map here or pick one up at the KCBIA’s main office #4-231 Victoria Street.
