BARRE Kamloops

In November 2015, BARRE Kamloops opened its doors on the 100 block of Victoria Street. Previously, Geralyn Alain had been teaching barre classes at a variety of different studios, as well as at Nuance Dance Studio where she met Kristen Pickell, another dance teacher. Entrepreneurship took form when Geralyn, her husband Joey, and Kristen Pickell decided to roll up their sleeves and create a boutique fitness studio experience in Downtown Kamloops. BARRE Kamloops is the first of its kind in the city, and we are lucky that they chose downtown as their home!

Regardless of where someone is at in their fitness journey, it’s a very welcoming place. This became very evident when we sat down with Geralyn.

This sense of community is evident as soon as you step into the studio whereatural light fills the bright open space. Above all, the first thing that can be noted is the warm welcome you receive and the positive energy that fills the room.

So, what is barre? Geralyn gives an excellent explanation, “Barre is a combination of Pilates, strength training, some dance elements and yoga. The classes are all mashed together into a package. We do a lot of work at the barre, [a long dowel] attached to the wall. We can use it to do a lot of cool things, including a lot of work for the booty, for the legs and then work into the arms with light weights and high repetition, followed by yoga and core work. That’s the format of the class. People who do barre notice that rather than a full range of motion workout-like a full squat- we focus on smaller movement like inching up, inching down… A lot of the time people are like ‘my legs are shaking!’ and that is totally normal because we’re working the muscles to the point of fatigue. People think they’ll come here and it’ll be a choreographed dance class. It’s so not that at all. It’s more fitness-based.”

BARRE Kamloops offers a variety of different classes includingpre-natal classes to “Classic” barre classes. There really is something for everyone, and all classes are beginner friendly.

One of the unique things about this amazing workout are the mom and baby classes that are offered.

“We have a mom and baby class which started when I had my son, Cohen. The babies are in carriers for the first half so get to go along for the ride. We really work to get people strong and bouncing back after pregnancy. We also have pre-natal classes too!” That’s right – between mom and baby classes as well as childminding available, you can bring your little one with you.No need to find a babysitter for this class!

“It’s a really accessible workout regardless of where you are in your fitness journey. If you’re pregnant there’s a class for you. If you’re working with injuries, classes can be modified for you. If you’re super strong and you’re a marathon runner, classes will be challenging for you because you’re working to stabilize muscles you don’t usually work,” says Geralyn.

She adds, “I find downtown is such a vibrant, awesome place to be. You can go to class, go grab lunch or a coffee at Motivo after, or just being in the center of Kamloops is really important for us. The visibility we get from foot traffic and having great neighbours is why we wanted to be downtown.”
