Lest We Forget

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Canadians pause for a moment to commemorate the armistice agreement that brought an end to the First World War at 11 am on November 11th, 1918. This upcoming Monday, we will commemorate this ceremonious day throughout the city of Kamloops. There will be a few events and ceremonies occurring downtown on Remembrance Day, which will provide an opportunity for residents to pay their respects and to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

Remembrance Day is an opportunity for communities to come together and collectively remember the suffering of war. Veterans come to remember and honour the fallen. Friends and family come to pay their respects and to remember the ones who died as well as those still living with memories of war. On Monday, November 11th, the annual Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at Riverside Park beginning at 10:45 am.

There are a few events lined up on the program for this Remembrance Day. The day will begin with the mounting of the cenotaph guard, then the colour party and the veteran’s company will march, and following that, if weather permits, there will be a fly past by 419 squadron from Cold Lake, Alberta. After the ceremonies, there will be a parade led by the Kamloops Pipe Band from Riverside to the dispersal point at 500 block Victoria Street. Following the dispersal, youth participants will be provided refreshments at Desert Gardens and adults will be invited to socialize at one of the Legions in town. On Sunday evening, November 10, there will also be a Remembrance Day dinner at the Columbo Lodge for $35 per person. Arrive at 6:30 for cocktails and 7:30 for dinner.

Another way to show your support this Remembrance Day is to make a donation and grab a poppy from one of the various businesses that have Royal Canadian Legion donation boxes near the register. The donations from this promotion go to veterans and youth programs each year.
