WHAT YEAR WERE YOU A CAP TEAM MEMBER?

2016

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH SINCE LEAVING THE CAP TEAM.

Since leaving the CAP Team, I have focused the skills I developed with Downtown Kamloops toward my educational and career experiences. I was inspired to further pursue a career in promotions and began working with Bell Media, representing the stations Virgin Radio, QMFM, CTV News and TSN in Vancouver. I have focused my public speaking skills which the CAP Team instilled in me by constantly presenting at these events on behalf of Bell Media promotions. While pursuing my Bachelor of Arts, I advanced my studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia for 6 months. This gave me the opportunity travel and gain incredible experiences and memories down under! I’m still constantly writing in my free time, and taking risks wherever I can.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB TITLE? IF YOU ARE A STUDENT, WHAT ARE YOU STUDYING?

I will be graduating with a Major in English Literature and in Minor in Commerce from the University of British Columbia in May 2019. Studying this diverse portfolio of courses was inspired by the CAP Team, where I was enthusiastic about the City Ambassador and Business Development aspects of the job.

WHAT WERE YOUR CAREER GOALS WHEN YOU STARTED WITH THE CAP TEAM?

When I was with the CAP Team, I began to shape my career path while pursuing my Bachelor of Arts. I knew I enjoyed writing and was interested in promotions and business development. Through the CAP Team’s training in social media advertising, public speaking and event planning, this job was a major outlet to inspire what I am now pursuing- a career in Public Relations.

HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR EXPERIENCE ON THE CAP TEAM HELPED YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?

I drew a lot of inspiration from the City Ambassador aspects to the job. My experience in planning city wide-events and engaging local businesses helped me feel more connected to the downtown Kamloops community. The CAP Team gave me the chance to undertake hands-on experience of the planning and execution of exciting community events, such as the Merchant’s Market. The payoff from this hard work was highly rewarding, and I felt pride in holding an integral role to what I am now proud to see of Kamloops’ vibrant downtown community.

WHAT WAS THE MOST VALUABLE SKILL LEARNED ON THE JOB?

The CAP Team gave me confidence in always having an open mind. No two days working as a CAP Team member were the same, and I gained confidence in a hugely diverse set of skills. I knew I had become a more open minded person when over a casual shift I had conducted an interview with a local business, removed graffiti in an alley, biked the perimeter of downtown and hosted a tour for Rocky Mountaineer Train guests- all within 8 hours!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE PROGRAM?

Being a CAP Team member allowed me to explore what skills I have and take on projects to challenge myself and exceed my own expectations. I knew I was interested in promotional writing, and helped to conduct interviews and write weekly People of the Neighbourhood articles about local business owners downtown. This both allowed me to grow stronger writing in a professional setting, and realize how much I enjoyed this aspect of the job. Now pursuing a career in Public Relations, the CAP Team was an outlet for me to realize my own creativity.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER CURRENT AND FUTURE CAP TEAM MEMBERS?

Make the most of your experience, if there’s an aspect of the job you really enjoy, try to take more of a leadership role in that area, have an open mind to all the random, crazy experiences you’ll work through… and have fun!

Our CAP Team Program is one of the KCBIA’s key programs. Since starting the program in 2004, we have had over 90 youth participate in the program. We are proud of what our CAP Team Members have achieved and wanted to share their successes and how being a part of such a great program helped them throughout their career. The Where Are They Now Series gives you a chance to catch up with past CAPies and see what they are up to!
