WHAT YEAR WERE YOU A CAP TEAM MEMBER?
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH SINCE LEAVING THE CAP TEAM.
After finishing school at TRU, I worked in environmental non-profits for five years as a campaigning and an organizing. For the last 7 years I have been working as a Communications Officer for the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB TITLE?
Senior Communications Officer- Saskatchewan Regional Office of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
WHAT WERE YOUR CAREER GOALS WHEN YOU STARTED WITH THE CAP TEAM?
My time on the CAP team counted as an internship for theTRU school of journalism. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to use my skills in communications and journalism to help better my community.
HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR EXPERIENCE ON THE CAP TEAM HELPED YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
I gained a lot of valuable experience on the CAP team – including early lessons in media relations which I now speak to when I give media training. I think it gave me a lot of confidence to talk to strangers, and diverse stakeholders to achieve goals.
WHAT WAS THE MOST VALUABLE SKILL LEARNED ON THE JOB?
All of my awesome bike riding skills! Seriously, I recently road a bike across Austria and the CAP bike training came in handy. My time on the CAP Team exposed me to many different ideas and perspectives. I really appreciated getting to learn about environmental design for safety, interacting with local service providers and business, and planning so many events.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE PROGRAM?
I loved my co-workers. It was such a great team. I also have a deep, deep love for tourist information that I credit to my time on the CAP team. I loved the tourism BC training, and getting to help visitors to Kamloops find the many gems the city has to offer. I still love pointing people in the direction of awesome things to do!
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER CURRENT AND FUTURE CAP TEAM MEMBERS?
Treasure your time together! Have fun. Also enjoy being young while you can!
Our CAP Team Program is one of the KCBIA’s key programs. Since starting the program in 2004, we have had over 90 youth participate in the program. We are proud of what our CAP Team Members have achieved and wanted to share their successes and how being a part of such a great program helped them throughout their career. The Where Are They Now Series gives you a chance to catch up with past CAPies and see what they are up to!
