WHAT YEAR WERE YOU A CAP TEAM MEMBER?
TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH SINCE LEAVING THE CAP TEAM.
I worked in many tourism related fields such as Event Coordinator at Sun Peaks Resort, Wilderness Canoe Guide, Ski/Bike and Outdoor Education Leader, Student Recruitment Event Manager and eventually landed my dream job as Event Manager at Sun Peaks Resort.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB TITLE?
After working as the Event Manager at Sun Peaks Resort for the past 4 years I am now on a new path working to raise the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts. I am a stay at home Mom to our 1.5 year old twin boys Hunter and Sawyer.
WHAT WERE YOUR CAREER GOALS WHEN YOU STARTED WITH THE CAP TEAM?
To own and operate a wilderness canoe guiding business. After gaining experience in events, the profession came naturally to me which led me in a new direction. Ultimately I landed my dream job combining my passion for the outdoors and my talents in events working as the Event Manger at Sun Peaks Resort.
HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR EXPERIENCE ON THE CAP TEAM HELPED YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS?
Being on the CAP team pushed me out of my comfort zone to approach business owners and guests to our community and engage with them. I was always a little nervous before but my experience on the CAP team gave me the confidence I needed to move forward. I got my first hands on event experience working as a team to organize events like to downtown Christmas Parade and the Spring Festival.
WHAT WAS THE MOST VALUABLE SKILL LEARNED ON THE JOB?
Communication. With overlapping schedules and working with a different team member every other day of the week it was very important to keep the line of communication going between us all. Planning events, current projects and patrol areas are just some examples of what we had to communicate between us. In those days we did not have cell phones…or barely used them so we had a working log book that we wrote in every day and tried to keep the email chains going.
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE PROGRAM?
The bike riding! I loved to be active in my job and riding my bike through Riverside Park and downtown Kamloops saying hi to all the locals made my summer. We would have competitions to see who could ride up 1st avenue without getting off and pushing their bike.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER CURRENT AND FUTURE CAP TEAM MEMBERS?
Have fun and get to know the people you are working with. Many of my team members I am still in contact with today and have become leaders in the communities they reside in. These connections are invaluable and will help you when you least expect it.
Our CAP Team Program is one of the KCBIA’s key programs. Since starting the program in 2004, we have had over 90 youth participate in the program. We are proud of what our CAP Team Members have achieved and wanted to share their successes and how being a part of such a great program helped them throughout their career. The Where Are They Now Series gives you a chance to catch up with past CAPies and see what they are up to!
