How would you define Kamloops? Answers to this question would likely vary across of wide spectrum, but I am confident that most long-time residents, recent arrivals, and sojourners would agree that Kamloops has an identity as an ’outdoor’ city. What I mean by this is that regardless of the season, there are always opportunities to experience the best Kamloops has to offer through the lens of outdoor “adventure recreation”. This identity has been built and developed largely in part to an active population, ambitious adventure recreation companies, outdoor sporting businesses, and of course the environment that is natural to the Central Interior of British Columbia. Part of what makes Kamloops a unique geographical location to both live and visit is its diversity of landscape. The semi-arid climate and the combination of grasslands and alpine mountain landscape create ideal conditions for all-season outdoor recreational activities.
So, what does Kamloops have to offer for adventure recreation? The CAP Team Visitor Info Centre at 340 Victoria Street is stocked full of information for numerous activities including golfing, biking, hiking, tennis, skateboarding, and longboarding among many others. As a response to the consistent demand for outdoor recreational equipment, services, and knowledge, Downtown Kamloops has established a network of businesses committed to preparing adventure recreation enthusiasts of all experience levels with the resources they need. Looking for skateboarding or snowboarding gear and accessories? The team at Oronge Boardshop should be the first people you consult with. Are you preparing for Bike to Work week and beyond? I can say from experience that Cycle Logic provides the highest quality of cycling products, repairs, and services. If you are thinking of doing some hiking or playing some tennis this summer, then my advice to you would be to visit Big Boot Inn and Red Wing Shoes to ensure that your feet are well taken care of. These are just a few examples of the businesses in Downtown Kamloops working to strengthen Kamloops’ identity as a hub for outdoor recreation and recreation tourism.
I have lived most of my life in Kamloops and growing up in a city dedicated to fostering active and outdoor activities has been rewarding to say the least. As a member of the CAP Team, I am fortunate to spend many days outdoors enjoying the fresh air and beautiful weather we are privileged to receive. Make sure to come Downtown and say ‘hello’, whether it’s on the street or at our Visitor Info Centre, and the CAP Team will guarantee you are fully informed and prepared for your next adventure.
