As we all know, after over a decade, our General Manager, Gay Pooler, is leaving the KCBIA. During Gay’s time at the KCBIA she has implemented a lot of new projects that have gone on to benefit both the downtown and the people who live, visit and shop here. Of course, being a CAP Team Member, my personal favorite project that the Gay helped develop would have to be the CAP Team.
This program has given me the opportunity to network with people I would never have had the chance to meet, it helped me loose 60 lbs, (okay, I gained some of that back – you win some and you lose some), it’s taught me A LOT of patience, and it’s provided me with the opportunity to voice my opinions on a larger scale. Gay has made a huge impact and a couple of our CAP Team members had a few words to say about it:
“One career and life skill that Gay taught me was about overcoming obstacles. Sometimes goals might hit a dead end and a little outside the box thinking and creativity can go a long way to achieving happiness and success. Persistence and perseverance is key!” says Jonathan George. Where Jon learned about thinking outside the box, Angela was able to develop her communication skills;
“Gay’s contributions to the ambassador program have benefited the CAP Team, as well as the wider Kamloops community. She is a strong advocate of improving communication skills. By introducing us all to the Toastmasters Youth Leadership program, I am a much more confident speaker and advocate of the downtown community!” – Angela Halas.
This program offers so much diversity and is a great stepping stone for young adults. Gay has seen over 85 students and recent graduates through the program. Former CAP Team members have moved on to work for multiple different organizations in law enforcement, social service, tourism, and the sciences. Time and time again, I have heard from our partners that this program is one of the most organized that they have ever seen. Of course, a lot of this can be credited to the fact that Gay has remained persistent and dedicated to the program over the years.
So, for us, this is a bitter sweet moment. We congratulate Gay on her soft-retirement, and we are happy to be welcoming a new Executive Director, Carl DeSantis. The team is more than excited to see what knowledge and opportunities we can squeeze out of him!
